This work is part of an ongoing series that explores the relationship between Indigenous visual traditions and the historical conventions of Western fine art. Drawing inspiration from Anishinaabe and Woodland artistic forms, the piece incorporates shapes, motifs, and symbolic imagery commonly found within Ojibwe art and places them within a surrealist visual environment. Through this approach, the work seeks to celebrate Indigenous artistic expression while positioning it within contexts from which Indigenous voices have often been excluded. By bringing these visual languages into dialogue, the piece reflects on the evolving nature of Indigenous art in a post-colonial world and challenges narrow definitions of what has traditionally been considered “fine art.” Rather than presenting Indigenous culture as static or historical, the work embraces its continued growth, adaptation, and relevance. It speaks to the resilience of Indigenous creativity and the ways contemporary Indigenous artists continue to shape cultural and artistic conversations. Love the new artwork in my office and living room. It lifts us up everyday, acts as a conversation piece in Zoom calls, and we love the most being able to support artists in our communities as well.
